How a transitional COO can help you regain control of your business. And help translate your vision into reality.

You’ve developed a great product.  You have a vision for where you can take your business.  You love innovating, selling your idea, building relationships.  But as the demands of your business increase, you’re spending more and more of your time doing the things you don’t enjoy.  How do you get control back?

A transitional, or interim, COO may be just what you need to regain control of your business and turn your vision into reality.  While you may not have the budget for a full-time COO, you may benefit from the skill set of a seasoned executive who can establish the infrastructure, put processes in place for smooth operations, build and align the team, and create a high-performance organization.  This frees up your time, allowing you to get back to the big ideas, key relationships, and creative problem-solving.  And, isn’t that why you got into the business in the first place?

FAQ’s

My business is unique; how will you be able to help me?

FirstI won’t pretend that I will know your business better than you do. However, my experience from a range of businesses over the past 30 years has given me perspective on what is essential to drive growth. In fact, clients have told me that the experiences I bring from other industries have provided new ways of solving problems that had seemed unsolvable.

I’m busy, and don’t have time to teach you the business.

Many of the CEOs I have helped are in industries that I’d never worked in previously.  Consequently, over the years I’ve developed a proven process for quickly learning the key drivers of a business, identify what’s working, what’s not, and define how to improve results.  While it’s important for me to collaborate with you, I also understand and respect your time constraints.

Aren’t consultants expensive?

I was a business owner like you so I understand the concern about cost control. You want results. So, before you spend a dime, I’ll sit down with you and map out the plan with you so you can assess if my approach will bring you the desired results and return on investment.

We’ve developed strategic plans in the past, but the team has never gotten fully on board.

My philosophy is that the only reason to develop a strategy is to drive behavior. Therefore, a good strategy must be clear, compelling, and actionable for every member of your team. It must be measurable. And you must have the tools to track performance on a weekly basis and then take corrective action when necessary. Additionally, I can assist with the on-going execution of the strategy, if needed.

How could an interim COO help me?

As the CEO, your focus is (or, at least you’d like it to be) on the big picture, innovation, key customers, and what lies ahead. If you’re stuck in the day to day operations, I can come in and drive performance, along with establishing the people, processes and accountabilities to free up your time. I can even assist in identifying and developing a permanent COO if that’s needed.

I’ve tried consultants before. How are you different?

Having run businesses in the past, I bring a business owners’ perspective to your situation.  Whether you need a strategic plan, a trusted advisor, or an interim COO, my focus is on delivering outcomes that drive growth and bottom-line improvements. I work alongside you and your team, not in a silo, which results in more rapid and lasting improvements.

Finally, if I don’t think I can significantly improve your business – which I can typically gauge after our initial meeting - I’ll let you know. If this is the case, I may even know of other people or organizations who could be a better fit, and I’d be happy to make a recommendation.

I asked Steve to help me translate my vision into a strategic plan for my organization. Steve earned the trust and respect of my team, and guided us to a clear, actionable strategy. My team fully embraced the plan and it has propelled our growth. I value Steve’s insight and invited him to join my board.”
